Navigating life through binaries inevitably fails.
soft and cruel emerged from a refusal to understand experience through opposition. Within tenderness exists aggression, within vulnerability a form of power, within comfort lies the possibility of harm. Emotions rarely exist as singular or stable states; they overlap, contaminate one another and shift through memory, desire and intimacy.
Human behaviour is often organised through categories: passive and active, pleasurable and painful, innocent and threatening. Yet lived experience rarely settles so neatly. What feels comforting can simultaneously wound, what appears fragile may also resist, and what threatens can invite closeness. Gestures associated with submission may conceal forms of agency, while expressions of control can reveal vulnerability beneath their surface.
Beneath ordinary life lies a reality that presses against the surface. In the middle of routine gestures, unfamiliar ruptures quietly emerge: an uneasy feeling while running errands, a fleeting moment of dissociation at the office. Existing somewhere between instinct, spirituality and the subconscious, these experiences resist explanation and are often dismissed so daily life can continue. What unsettles us most is often not the rupture itself, but the awareness that something unknowable exists within ourselves and others: psychological depths that cannot be fully understood, categorised or controlled.
Luísa’s paintings emerge through association rather than narrative, allowing images to move between and across emotional and psychological states. Symbols reappear as unstable carriers of meaning, resisting fixed interpretation. Working rapidly and intuitively in acrylic, she approaches painting as an extension of thought before it fully settles into language, preserving moments of uncertainty, tension and vulnerability within the work itself.
soft and cruel insists on moments where cognition is questioned, taking them as evidence that human experience exceeds the fixed structures we impose. The exhibition rejects the idea of a singular or stable consciousness or reality, instead embracing the possibility that multiple existential states coexist within us, including those that remain unnamed, suppressed or beyond comprehension.
Rather than pushing unstable realities away, soft and cruel lingers within them, allowing contradiction and uncertainty to exist without resolution.
Luísa Saldanha (Lisbon, 1999) is a Portuguese artist based in Lisbon. She completed a BA in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon in 2021, and an MFA at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels in 2024.
Working primarily through painting and drawing, with occasional sculptural interventions, Luísa’s practice unfolds as a visual diary where emotional and psychological experiences are translated through recurring figures, gestures and symbols.
Her work is particularly concerned with contradictions and the instability of emotional categories. Navigating tensions such as pleasure and pain, dominance and submission, innocence and threat, she explores the ways opposing sensations coexist and collapse into one another.
Underlying her practice is an interest in the irrational and unknowable aspects of consciousness: fleeting ruptures within ordinary life, emotional states that resist explanation and psychological depths that remain beyond categorisation or control.
Rather than resolving contradiction, Luísa’s work lingers within ambiguity, suggesting a more fluid psychological terrain where conflicting sensations exist simultaneously, embracing the unstable nature of human experience.

soft and cruel surge de uma recusa em compreender a experiência através da oposição. Na ternura existe agressão; na vulnerabilidade, formas de poder; no conforto, a possibilidade de ferir. Emoções raramente existem como estados singulares ou estáveis; sobrepõem-se, contaminam-se mutuamente e transformam-se através da memória, do desejo e da intimidade.
O comportamento humano é frequentemente organizado através de categorias: passivo e ativo, prazer e dor, inocência e ameaça. No entanto, a experiência vivida raramente se fixa de forma tão clara. Aquilo que oferece conforto pode simultaneamente ferir, o que aparenta ser frágil pode também resistir, e aquilo que ameaça pode igualmente convidar à proximidade. Gestos associados à submissão podem ocultar formas de agência, enquanto expressões de controlo podem revelar, sob a superfície, estados de vulnerabilidade.
Subjacente à vida quotidiana existe uma realidade que insiste constantemente em emergir à superfície. Entre gestos de rotina, pequenas rupturas manifestam-se silenciosamente: uma sensação de estranheza ao realizar tarefas do dia a dia, um breve momento de dissociação durante um dia normal de trabalho. Algures entre o instinto, a espiritualidade e o subconsciente, estas experiências resistem à explicação e são frequentemente descartadas para que a vida quotidiana possa continuar. O que mais nos perturba não é necessariamente a ruptura em si, mas a consciência de que algo desconhecido existe dentro de nós e dos outros: profundezas psicológicas que resistem ser compreendidas, categorizadas ou controladas.
A pintura de Luísa surge através da associação, e não da narrativa, permitindo que imagens se desloquem entre diferentes estados emocionais e psicológicos. Os símbolos aparecem recorrentemente como portadores instáveis de significado, resistindo a interpretações fixas. Ao trabalhar de forma rápida e intuitiva em acrílico, a artista aborda a pintura como uma extensão do pensamento antes deste se consolidar em linguagem, preservando momentos de incerteza, tensão e vulnerabilidade.
soft and cruel insiste em momentos em que a cognição é questionada, tomando-os como evidência de que a experiência humana excede as estruturas fixas que lhe impomos. Esta exposição rejeita a ideia de uma consciência ou realidade singular e estável, abraçando a possibilidade de múltiplos estados emocionais coexistirem dentro de nós, incluindo aqueles que permanecem desconhecidos, reprimidos ou para além da compreensão.
Em vez de afastar estas realidades instáveis, soft and cruel permanece nelas, permitindo que a contradição e a incerteza existam sem resolução.
